The Descartes+ Building intends to be an exemplary structure, concentrating what is best in terms of sustainable building, and producing more energy than it will use. Such is the ambitious wager claimed by the team of architects who were chosen to produce this building expected by 2012 within the Sciences and Techniques Cluster in Cité Descartes.
Descartes+ is a positive energy building project concentrating cutting-edge technology and know-how in terms of sustainable development: photovoltaic cells, water-table-fed heat pumps, radiating-floor free cooling, rainwater retrieval and purification, vertical geothermal probes and a central hanging garden to see the exchanges blossom.
The result of all this will be energy consumption at 30kW per m² per annum instead of 250kW per m² per annum for a similar building. Better still, this future HQE® building already meets European standards slated to be in effect by… 2020!
Ultimately, the Descartes+ Building will host 1,200 students and researchers from the Paris Est Centre and will feature world-class research facilities. Among them, let us cite the Ponts et Chaussées laboratory, the INRETS (National Transport and Safety Research Institute) and the CSTB (Building Scientific and Technical Centre).
Its strong points include a 5,000-m2 surface area spread over 5 levels, a virtual reality facility (for 3D screenings), which at this time only exists in Sofia Antipolis, as well as high-tech facilities to model and simulate very-low-energy or positive-energy buildings.
This €22.5m project is largely funded by the Ile-de-France Region, the École des Ponts ParisTech and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research.
